Sunday 12th September Under 10's 26 v Beddau Under 10's 28 A sunny start to the season saw us welcome Beddau to Cae Fardre. We were pleased to give their first taste of competitive rugby to Will, Sam, Beau and Lewis and welcome Jarred and Cameron to the Under 10's 'family'.
A great start saw us score first 'third' tries through Oli and Alex, both converted by Dan. Beddau responded strongly and suddenly we trailed by 14 points. Thanks to great team work Dan scored a cracking try to re- dress the balance. With minutes remaining a turnover led to Dan streaking away and scoring another try which was created by hard work at the break down. Llantwit pressed hard for a game winning score but ultimately ended up just scored. That being said a super game of rugby and a very encouraging start to the new season. There were a number of stand out performances but Ieuan's commitment and Tom Humphrey's tenacity caught the coahes' eyes.
Sunday 19th September Ponytclun Under 10's 19 v Under 10's 26 A short trip to our friends at Pontyclun saw another great turnout and Daniel R make his debut for the 'Blues'. This was an excellent game and well refereed. Ponyclun got off to the better start and after the first 'third' led 14 -0. Llantwit were able to up the pressure defensively which led to openings which Dan was able to exploit and with 15 minutes to play the score stood at 19 - 14 in Pontyclun's favour. The boys' level of commitment and will to win increased further in the final 'third' and further tries from Dan enabled the boys to emerge deserved winners. Dafydd's strength and Jarred's ball handling skills draw appreciation from the away supporters. Bring on our festival!
26 September 2010- Llantwit Fardre RFC - Minis Festival For the first time the Minis Festival was held in September on Cae Fardre and we all felt that it was a great success. We were helped by a beautiful sunny early Autumn day and the co-operation and positive attitude shown by the vast majority of parents and players from Beddau, Pontyclun and Rhydfelin. Unfortunately Treorchy withdrew on the morning of the festival and were replaced by a 'Barbarian' team which ensured that all the boys would have a good run out.
Our first opponents were Beddau and as anticipated it was a very close match. The commitment and tackling was immense and the game seemed to be heading for a draw until in the dying seconds Oli ripped the ball from the Beddau centre and sprinted40 yards to score. Next up were the Baa Baas and our boys were able to display some of their developing handling skills in easing to a comfortable win by 8 tries to nil. Our third opponents were Rhydfelin who after a slow start looked to be a very good outfit. It was a game that ebbed and flowed with our boys twice coming from behind and a draw looked to be a fair result. However Rhydfelin scored a scored in the last minute that looked highly debatable and left Russ and Dennis with their heads in their hands and a narrow 3 - 2 loss. However a quick look at the results meant that a win against Pontyclun in our final match could be enough to see us top the table. This was another great game with the will to win apparent. Pontyclun took the lead with another decision that seemed to go against us but we struck back in the second half with Dan scoring in the corner. The boys threw everything they had at Pontyclun but that further try remained elusive. The match finished 1-1 which meant we finished a highly commendable 3rd.A great squad effort from everyone! 10 October 2010 Under 10's v Pontypridd U10s On Sunday we welcomed Pontypridd to Cae Fardre. After a promising opening 3 - 4 minutes when our boys were able to hold their own Ponty's superior physicality and technical ability began to count. To be fair our boys' heads never dropped but were able to do little to stem wave after wave of Pontypridd attacks. The change in the kick off rule did not help as our boys were repeatedly penned back in the final quarter of our field and were unable to gain any field position. Ponty scored a number of well worked tries and have a number of very promising players, 8 of whom have been selected for the Under 11 District side. However all our boys got a good run out and there were some particularly pleasing performances from Cian, Beau, Dewi and Lloyd who put in a number of good tackles and runs.
17 October 2010 Abercwmboi U10s 20 v Under 10's 10 Today saw our first venture of the season into the Cynon Valley. Last season's encounters with Abercwmboi were closely fought and today was no exception. Abercwmboi took an early lead but a fine individual effort from Dan saw us draw level. Abercwmboi's forwards were a strong bunch but our boys stood up to them with strong mauling from Sam and Dan Ryan and a barnstorming run from Dafydd. We could never get our heads in front and an increasingly liberal interpretation of the Pathways rules left our boys a little confused. Another try from Dan set up a barnstorming finish but we ended up just short with the final score being 20 - 10. Great commitment from all our squad - good to see 18 of you there today. More work in training on handling skills, offloading and clearing out at rucks will be the focus on Wednesday.
24 October 2010 Under 10's 71 v Porth U10s 12 Porth were welcome visitors to Cae Fardre this morning and brought with them a mix of under 9's and 10's. Our boys made a strong start and put together some good passing moves to score some lovely tries. The tries were shared around the team with Thomas Hunter, Thomas Humphreys, Oli, Casey and Cameron scoring 1st 'third' tries. One of the most pleasing aspects of the game was the performances of Lewie, Lewis, Jack, Sam, Joe, Beau and Ieuan Bell in the second third. Beau's charge down the left hand touch line and Lewis' conversion being stand out moments. Tries from Jack, Sam and Tom Humph saw us win the 'third' 19 - 12. More changes affected the boys fluency in the final third but they still managed to rack up a further 3 tries. Well played everyone and good luck to Porth for the rest of their season.
24 October 2010 - BLUES CUP Builth Wells U10s 19 v Under 10's 7 Today saw us make one of the longest journeys in Welsh rugby (or at least that's what it felt like) as we travelled to Builth to play in the preliminary round of the Blues Cup. The boys made their usual slow start and were soon 7 - 0 down. However the boys were soon into their stride and were putting in some big hits against a very strong and physically superior Builth side. Some of the work at the breakdown was also first rate but Builth scored a further try just before the half time interval to take a 12 - 0 lead into the break. There was a renewed vigour to the way we started the 2nd half and Casey streaked away to score in the corner. Dan's conversion meant that we were within a converted try of taking the lead. However the penalty count (9 - 1) meant that we could not secure enough possession and eventually after sustained defence Builth scored in the dying minutes to secure a 19 - 7 victory. Thanks to Builth for hosting us and we wish them well in the competition. A special well done to all our boys for their 100% commitment! Here's to next year!
7 November 2010 Under 10's v Porth U10s Porth made a welcome return to Cae Fardre this morning. Both teams have squads with good numbers and we were able to have 2 separate games. First up were out Tigers who all played extremely well in securing a 45 - 5 win. Tom Humphrey orchestrated a lot of the moves, Ieuan Davies was inches away from a hat trick and Lewis not only captained the side well but also scored his first try for Llantwit. Next up were our Lions who never really hit top form today. An over keenness to get their hands on the ball is working against the team as a whole and work still needs to be done on tackling low and using the ball to meet the man. That being said there were a number of positives - good counter rucking and support work. It was also good to see the tries being shared out amongst Cian, Casey, Oli, Dan and Alex with the final score being 35 - 0.
14 November 2010 Nelson U10s 15 v Under 10's 0 Today saw us make our first visit to Nelson. We arrived with a depleted squad but it was clear from a good warm up that the boys had come to play. Nelson were always going to be a strong test but this was far and away our defensive display this season. 3 times in the first half Nelson had the ball over the try line but were unable to ground it due to fantastic last ditch defence from Alex, Tom Hunter and Ieuan D. Lloyd made a great interception and looked as though he was going the length of the pitch to score but was brought down.Nelson scored at the end of the half to lead 1 - 0. The boys were beginning to use the ball well and Ieuan B, Casey and Cameron made some strong runs. However Nelson kept on coming and were leading 3 -0. However the boys heads never dropped and if anything were finishing the stronger. Cameron and Oli went agonisingly close to scoring tries and Lewis was still tackling anything that moved as the final whistle sounded. Well done boys - great performance.
21 November 2010 Under 10's 19 v Beddau 26 A cold wintry November morning saw us welcome Beddau to Central Park. This was our 3rd encounter this season and proved to be as close as the previous encounters. Beddau only had 7 players so Dafydd, Lloyd, Ieuan B and Jack were great in volunteering to play for our visitors. All of them played out of their skins and certainly impressed their coaches for the day. Llantwit again started slowly and some of our first up tackling was not quite there which allowed some of the Beddau forwards to make some big yards. We could never get our heads in front although tries from Oli, Alex and a great individual effort from Humph saw us trail by 7 points with only seconds left on the clock. A knock on gave Llantwit great field position and Alex was inches away from a game equalising try but was thwarted by great cover defence. Well played everyone!
9 January 2011 Under 10's v Tonyrefail U10s Today we welcomed Tonyrefail to Central Park. After a week of rain an unexpected frost placed the game in jeopardy but thankfully the sun came out, the pitch thawed and our boys were back in action! It might be a new year but we made our usual slow start and Tonyrefail opened the scoring. After that the boys got back into their stride. Great to see some aggressive tackling and ripping from Casey and Lewis looking to get stuck in. Some of the hard work in training is paying off and it was hard to believe that Harry was playing his first game as he made good yards time and time again from set pieces. Tries from Cian and Casey saw us assume a healthy lead after the 1st third. A number of substitutions didn't affect the flow of the game and as well as some fine individual tries from Alex and Dan John a number of tries came from good teamwork. Everyone more than played their part but Dan Ryan, the 2 Ieuans and Thomas Hunter deserve an extra mention for their often unseen but very important hard work.
23 January 2011 Under 10's v Tonyrefail U10s Today saw us welcome local rivals Rhydfelin to Cae Fardre. On a good day for rugby both sides did not disappoint in a very even and competitive game. Neither side had played much rugby in the past 8 weeks or so and Rhydfelin were first out of the blocks with a well worked try. Llantwit were quickly into their stride and tries from Alex, Casey and Cian saw the 1st third end with the 'blues' leading 3 - 1. Rhydfelin played some good rugby in the 2nd third and closed the gap to 4 - 3 with 10 minutes to play. The 2nd third will be remembered for Harry's first try for Llantwit - several opposition players were left in their wake and a lung bursting 40 yard dash saw him cross the line. Rhydfelin made a great start to the final third and 2 quick tries saw them take the lead for the first time. Llantwit then showed great resolve and will to win in first getting back on level terms thanks to Casey's try and then Alex was able to scamper over in the corner. There was still time for Rhydfelin to launch a final attack but valiant defence saw Llantwit hang on to a win that was just about deserved. Some great individual tries but most pleasing was the team work and the effort being put in on the training pitch being rewarded. A special mention for Jarred who had an outstanding game against his former team mates.
20 February 2011 Under 10's v Pontyclun U10s This match will be remembered for many years for the greatest comeback since Lazarus . Many thanks to Pontyclun for their patience in waiting for the Under 15s game to finish which meant that we did not kick off until 12.45. That being said so desperate were our boys for some game time that they would probably have waited until it was dark. After a promising start which saw Casey open the scoring with a try in the corner lack of match practice was evidenced by a general reluctance to get stuck in and too many missed tackles allowed Pontyclun to nudge into a 2 –1 lead after the 1st third. Harry levelled the score with a lung busting sprit up the touchline but the rest of this third was all Pontyclun. Their game plan clicked and with good rucking and use of the ball they eased to a 6 – 2 lead with 15 minutes remaining. Whatever Russ said during the team talk certainly worked and all the boys played together as a team and Pontyclun’s lead was gradually hauled in. Tries from Casey, Cian, Dan John and Harry ultimately saw our boys maintain their unbeaten start to 2011. Let’s hope the weather plays fair and we can now have an uninterrupted run through until the middle of May!! Credit to Pontyclun and our boys for the good competitive spirit the game was played in.
27 February 2011 Under 10's v Tonyrefail U10s A welcome return to Central Park for Tonyrefail and the weather stayed fair and both sides served up a feast of open rugby. Our boys started brightly and Alex opened the scoring. The tackling was as good as it has been all season. Cian led the way with some bone crunching hits and Casey seemed to revel in his forward role. It was also encouraging to see the boys trying to use the ball which allowed Dan to find space out wide and score 2 tries in the 2nd third. Dafydd will remember today for a long time - not only did he captain the side well but he also scored a great try. When Cameron scored early in the final third a landslide victory seemed on the cards but Tonyrefail never let their heads drop and responded fantastically to finish the strongest and score 3 late tries. A great turnout today (17 of you) and a victory earned by the whole squad!!
6 March 2011 Under 10's v Taffs Well U10s Today saw us welcome a depleted Taffs Well squad to Cae Fardre. Many thanks to our super subs Lloyd and Dafydd agreeing to play for our visitors. Although the boys were able to run in a number of tries this was a slightly below par performance. We are still tending to play as individuals and need to develop confidence in allowing the ball to do the work and be more effective and combative in the ruck. On a positive note the boys defensive work continues to improve and some of the tries, particularly from Ieuan Bell came from good passing movements. It was also good to see Ieuan Davies' support work rewarded with a try. Next week we welcome Abercwmboi in what promises to be a stern challenge to our unbeaten record in 2011!!
13 March 2011 Under 10's v Abercwmboi U10s A super spring morning saw us welcome Abercwmboi and what a feast of rugby we had. We fielded a 'development' side against a strong Abercwmboi 9's team. Both sides played their part in an excellent game with Llantwit emerging deserved winners by 3 tries to one. However the Abercwmboi side should feel very proud of the way they played and they'll have little difficulty adapting to rucking next season. Well played Rhys on his 1st game in Llantwit colours! So onto the main event and it certainly did not disappoint. It was the most intense game we had played for some time and no quarter was asked for or given. Abercwmboi were a well organised team but strong tackling from our boys kept knocking them back. Abercwmboi's continued pressure eventually brought them 2 tries . However an interception try from Dan J just before the break meant that we were only a score behind. The 2nd half was no different to the first. Casey threw himself into anything that was green and there was some good off loading and passing with Cian, Tom Hunter and Dan R showing that what works well in training can be put into practice come match day. Abercwmboi's number 8 scored a good individual try to extend the lead to 3 - 1. Our boys' heads never dropped and they kept trying right up to the final whistle. However Abercwmboi's defence stood firm and we could not reduce the lead. Well done everybody. We look forward to doing battle again with Abercwmboi in their festival in May.
20 March 2011 Under 10's v Garw Valley U10s A depleted Garw Valley side were welcome visitors to Cae Fardre this morning. As Garw only had 6 players we were grateful to our professional sub Dafydd as well as Ieuan B, Rhys Butler and Ieuan D agreeing to play for Garw in the 1st half. After a slightly hesitant start the boys were soon into their strides. There was some good off the ball running which allowed us to create some space out wide and the tries started to come. There was also some strong running and intensity in the tackle area which brought about tries for Lloyd (according to my records a long overdue first try) and Tom Hunter. Oli atoned for losing the ball when over the line with a short range try while Alex's came from good team work and good passing. A number of changes were made at half time and to Garw's credit they began to play good rugby with their number 15 outstanding. There was a real possibility that Garw could actually snatch a dramatic win until Casey did what only Casey can do - a number of line breaks saw him cross for one of the quickest hat tricks known to Welsh rugby and a comfortable winning margin was achieved.Well done Zac on his debut. Onwards, upwards and across the border for a taste of RFU rules next Sunday!!!
27 March 2011 - TOUR Burnham-on-Sea U10s v Under 10's 14 of our boys had made a first rugby trip across the bridge and there was some concern from the coaches that they would struggle to cope with 2 late nights and the English rules. However the boys did themselves proud and everyone put in a great performance. There was some great scrummaging from Dafydd and Sam, our 2 hookers Ieuan D and Lloyd found their targets in the lineouts with unerring accuracy and Dan R and Cameron rampaged around the pitch like 2 seasoned second row forwards. The backs were pretty sharp as well - Oli and Cian sniped and probed well, Casey and Tom H ran hard and fast, Ieuan B and Lewis tackled like demons and were always in support and Alex marauded as only he can and Jack got stuck in and went on some mazy runs. There was even time for a quick cameo appearance from Rhys. The boys scored some fine tries, were strong in the tackle and competed well at the breakdown.
Many thanks to Burnham for hosting us and for the excellent way the game was refereed. A memorable performance in a memorable weekend. Bring on Spring Tour 2012!
3 April 2011 Ystrad Rhondda U10s v Under 10's 12 hardy souls travelled to Ystrad Rhondda after a fixture was secured by Russ at the 11th hour. What a performance this was!! Every member of the squad played to their fullest potential. The tackling was ferocious and pressure we were able to put on a very skillful side was immense. It was great to see that he effort being put in on Wednesday evenings is beginning to pay dividend. We have never rucked so well and Oli was able to get the backline moving. Tries from Casey, Alex and Tom Hunter saw us lead 3 - 0 at half time. Casey benefited from further hard work from his team mates and stormed over for a further 4 tries after the break. This performance augurs well for the forthcoming festivals. Man of the match - no; men of the match - all of you!!! Well played.
10 April 2011 Penallta U10s v Under 10's On a blazing hot April day we made our first trip to Penallta with optimism high after our good run of late. The boys were soon into their stride and were putting Penallta under pressure. This led to some turnovers and Alex almost opened the scoring only to have the ball knocked from his grasp as he tried to ground it. Some great cover tackling and counter rucking thwarted a promising Penallta attack and allowed the boys to regain field position in their opponent's 22. Further pressure forced a knock on and Oli scooped upthe loose ball to open the scoring. Great jackaling from Alex allowed him to emerge from a ruck and scamper over in the corner. A Casey 'special' extended the lead at half time to 3 -0and was true reward for great team work. With loads of water on board the boys kept up the pace in the second half. The forwards kept doing the hard work with Cameron revelling in his new role with some hits and strong runs. Some quick use of the ball at penalties gave Dan the opportunity to use his pace and cross for 2 tries. If the boys were not quite playing total rugby they weren't far off and Ieuan Bell crossed for a final try which he finished well after great support and passing. This really was a great squad effort with all 15 boys playing their part to the full. We can approach the 3 festivals we've got coming up in the next month with real confidence! thanks to Penallta for accommodating us at short notice and being very gracious hosts. We look forward to welcoming them to Cae Fardre in the not too distant future.
17 April 2011 Pontyclun Festival Expectations were high after our recent run of good form as we made the short journey to Pontyclun for their annual festival.
First up were Rumney (Cardiff) whom we had not encountered since those dim and distant tag days. Some of their boys had certainly grown and two of their number would have had no difficulty buying White Lightning from their local Spar! However everyone got stuck in with Alex showing the importance of low tackling. A couple of half breaks from Casey and Cian gave hope of an early lead but when the half time whistle sounded all was still to play for. Rumney scored soon after the break but heads certainly didn't drop and we came tantalisingly close to an equalising score but to no avail. A great performance but an opening loss. Well done to Dafydd for showing determination in recovering from a huge hit to getting straight back on and taking the game to a big Rumney pack.
Our next opponents were Llanharan. Some super skills were on display as we edged to a well deserved 4 - 1 win. Perhaps the try of the day came from Casey - Dan R took the ball into the heart of the Llanharan pack, quick ruck ball saw Alex find space before an excellent offload put the 'Blond Bomber' over in the corner. Tom Humph did very well at scrum half as Oli struggled to recover from his cricked neck and Tom Hunter's strong running and tackling caught the eye.
We soon relaised that the next game against Pontyclun A was going to be make or break. Previous encounters have been close and this was no different. Cameron and Ieuan D showed up strongly in the forwards and we were able to put our hosts under early pressure. The pressure told as Harry crossed for a fabulous early try. Alex continued to tackle everything that moved and we led 1 - 0 at half time. Pontyclun equalised soon after the break but with Lloyd and Sam energising the pack the ball was worked free to Casey - a typical 50 yard burst with defenders floundering in his wake looked as if it would take us to a well deserved win only for a fantastic cover tackle to knock him into touch inches from the line. As in our feastival in September the score finished all sqaure (1-1).
Our final game was against Pontyclun B. The boys knew that a convincing win would be needed if we were to secure 2nd place. We started well with earlt tries from Alex and Casey. Oli's neck was a lot better and he was able to start dictating play. We were also able to give some valuable game time to Lewis and Jack and they showed up strongly. The final score was 6 - 1 and the boys couldn't have given any more.
Pontyclun A played exceedingly well to draw with Rumney in the penultimate game which meant that we had to settle for 3rd place. However this should be seen as a fantastic achievement and some silverware is hopefully not too far away!! Bring on our remaining festivals.
A big thank you to our friends at Pontyclun for running a first rate tournament and we wish them well for the rest of the season.
1 May 2011 Tonyrefail Festival - Under 10s - WINNERS Expectations were high as we travelled to Tonyrefail's festival for the first time. After a lengthy wait our first match saw us pitted against our hosts, Tonyrrefail. A quick start saw us open up an early lead but this was a lacklustre performance which did not bode well for the rest of the tournament. That being said we scored further tries in the second half to ease to a 6 - 0 win. Harry, Dan J and Casey scored some great tries, Alex's tackling was again ferocious and Dafydd added real impetus to the pack in the second half.
Our next opponents were Porth. Our boys raised the intensity from the first match and again started positively. The rucking was much improved and Dan R set the tone with some powerful driving and ripping. Tom Hunter and Lloyd supported well and we began to play some very good rugby. Cian and Jarred orchestrated things well from half back with Cian being named man of the match by the referee. The tries were shared around as we recorded a 8 - 0 victory.
The boys had realised that a first tournament victory was in their grasp but Gilfach Goch would have to be beaten. If there were any nerves they did not show as our boys turned in their performance of the season. The desire to win was perhaps evidenced by the fact that Gilfach hardly set foot in our half. The tackling was first rate and some of our attacking moves began to pay off. Cameron's great support work brought him 2 tries, Ieuan B, Lewis and Rhys B showed up strongly in the loose and all played significant roles in creating tries. A super move which saw quick ball being re- cycled from 2 rucks allowed Oli to sell an outrageous dummy and scamper over in the corner to seal a 8 - 0 victory.
What an outstanding performance from all 15 boys - a real squad effort. A great day ended with the boys being presented with their winners' medals by the Welsh captain Matthew Rees. There was one final surprise with Harry being presented with the player of the tournament trophy - a well deserved accolade.
We can now look forward to our final festival of the season at Abercwmboi with real confidence!
8 May 2011 Ynysowen U10s v Under 10's Old acquaintances from mine and Russ’s Level One coaching days were renewed as we made a first visit to Gary’s Ynysowen team. They came with a good reputation and we knew that we were in for a stern challenge. In what was undoubtedly the best 14 and a half minutes of rugby the boys had ever played tries from Alex and Cian (2) saw us lead 3 – 0 but fair does to Ynysowen they never allowed their heads to drop and scored a great try just before the half time break. Our hosts upped the pressure in the 2nd half but fantastic tackling from all the team allowed us to record a fine win after 30 minutes of great rugby.
A further ‘third’ allowed all our squad to have a great run out. Jack was the stand out player with his solo try to belng etched in the memory. There were also very encouraging performances from Rhys B, Lewis and Sam.
15 May 2011 Abercwmboi Festival And so it came to pass that our last games of the season were to be played at the Abercwmboi Festival. It promised to be our sternest test to date and a somewhat lacklustre warm did not bode well. First up were our opponents from last Sunday, Ynysowen. We were quick out of the blocks and had our opponents rattled. We started running in tries from everywhere but little did we know at this stage how important each try would be. Special mention to Dan R for a first (and long overdue!) competitive try in Llantwit colours. A great performance saw us ease to a 40 – 0 victory.
Newbridge were our next opponents and it was the first time that we had locked horns. This was a very entertaining game between 2 pretty evenly matched teams. The boys rucked and counter rucked as well as they had all season allowing Oli to set the backs loose. Ultimately the boys’ desire to will and ability to put Newbridge under pressure told as we won by 2 tries to 1.
Nelson were defending champions and came with a well deserved reputation. This promised to be a tough old game and the travelling faithful were not to be disappointed. The intensity of this game was incredible and our boys did not give an inch. Alex (as to be expected) relished it but Cian, Thomas Hunter, Cameron and Lloyd also showed up well. A Casey ‘special’ saw us secure to a half time lead. The onslaught from Nelson at the start of the 2nd half was ferocious and eventually they drew level. However the result meant that we would go into the last match with our destiny in our hands.
Our final opponents of the day were our hosts Abercwmboi. There has seldom been little to separate these sides but we had narrowly lost out to them twice this season. We started well with Harri forcing his way over in the corner and Alex soon added a second. Abercwmboi clawed their way back into the game but shortly before the interval a great team effort was finished off by Ieuan Davies whose fantastic support work saw him pick up a low pass and show great strength in reaching the try line. The second half was a tense affair and with a degree of tiredness beginning to show Abercwmboi drew level and the game ended in a 15 – 15 draw.
The following 20 minutes were agonising. Jim had worked out that Nelson would need to beat Newbridge by 5 tries or more to snatch the trophy from our grasp. Fair does to Nelson with 2 minutes remaining they had scored 3 tries but to great delight Newbridge’s defence stood firm and it appeared that we were home and dry. We still needed Mark’s input to point out that the organisers’ adding up was a little lacking before we were confirmed as victors.
